Peridot is a gem quality variant of olivine or chrysolite. The olive green color is dependent on its iron content, they can range from yellowish to brownish olive green. Unlike most gemstones that form in the earths crust, Peridot forms in earths upper mantle in silica deffecient rock, or in pallasitic meteorites.
